Keynote Speaker Profiles

Peter Johnson, Director of International Admissions, Full-time MBA Program, Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley

Peter Johnson is director of international admissions for the Haas School of Business MBA program at the University of California, Berkeley. He has worked in higher education for 17 years, and has been with the Haas Schoolof Business since 1999. Mr. Johnson has extensive experience in professional school, graduate, undergraduate, and international admissions.

Wendy Hansen, Associate Director of MBA Admissions, Graduate School of Business, Stanford University

Wendy Hansen is an Associate Director of MBA Admissions at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Prior to joining MBA Admissions, she worked for five years as a consultant for Hewitt Associates, a global human resources consulting firm. Her experience also includes career development, consumer products, and high-tech marketing. Wendy received both a B.S. degree in Mathematical and Computational Sciences and an M.B.A. degree from Stanford University.

Bryan McSweeney, Associate Director, MBA Admissions, University of California, Irvine, Graduate School of Management

Bryan McSweeney is the Associate Director of the MBA Program at the University of California, Irvine's Graduate School of Management. Currently, his responsibilities include recruitment, admissions, and fellowship management for incoming students to the full time program. Prior to UC Irvine, Bryan worked for six years in the aerospace industry as a contracts manager. He also spent three years as a high school history teacher and as a basketball coach. Bryan received his MBA from UC Irvine with an emphasis in strategic analysis, and a bachelor degree in Sociology from Stanford University.

David Ai, MBA, Stanford, VP, Hitachi Corporate Venture

David Ai has 19 years of operating experience in the IT industry in Silicon Valley. While at Hewlett-Packard, Mr. Ai started his engineering career in relational database technology, and was a project manager until 1992. Mr. Ai worked for Varian Oncology Systems where he was a vice president and general manager of a software division. Mr. Ai also has extensive entrepreneurial experiences at three startup companies: Director of Product Marketing at General Wireless Communications, Vice President of Marketing and acting Vice President of Engineering at Cirque Corporation, and CEO of WebJK Limited. He started up SUNeVision Ventures' San Francisco practice in 2000, and joined Hitachi Corporate Venture Catalyst Division as Vice President in December 2001. Mr. Ai holds a bachelor degree in psychology from National Taiwan University, a M.S. degree in computer science from Indiana University, and an M.B.A. from Stanford University. Hitachi Corporate Venture Catalyst Division is the venture capital arm of Hitachi, Ltd., one of the largest Japan-based global IT companies. Its 2001 revenue was more than U.S. $60 billion, and has a wide spectrum of high tech products and services. Hitachi CVC invests in early product shipment stage or expansion stage companies, and concentrates on advanced technologies in software, hardware, systems, networking and nanotechnology areas. Hitachi invests as a co-investor (not a lead VC) only.

Jana Hee, Director, Graduate Business Admissions and Financial Aid, Leavey School of Business, Santa Clara University

Jana Hee is the Director of Graduate Business Admissions and Financial Aid at the Santa Clara University Leavey School of Business. She is responsible for Admissions for the Evening and Saturday MBA Programs and is the chair of the Admissions Committee. Prior to becoming the Director, Ms. Hee was a senior member of the Alumni Relations staff and an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions. While on staff in the Alumni Relations Office, she worked with 20-30 chapters nationwide. In the Undergraduate Admissions she was responsible for the recruitment and application review for students on the west coast, Hawaii, and parts of the mid-west . Ms. Hee brings more than 10 years of experience in higher education. She earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Santa Clara University

Julie Krugman, Director of MBA Career Services, Santa Clara University

Julie Krugman is the Director of MBA Career Services at the Santa Clara University Leavey School of Business. At Santa Clara she serves the career needs of over 1,000 MBA students and 9,000 alumni through career counseling, resume writing, job search strategy sessions, workshops and events. Some events of note in her career at Santa Clara include the MBA Career Happy Hours and MBA Career Roundtable Discussion Sessions.

Ms. Krugman joined the Santa Clara team after six distinguished years at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University in Chicago. While at Northwestern she served as the Assistant Director of MBA Admissions and as the Career Development Manager for Kellogg's part-time MBA student population. Her previous roles at Northwestern included experience with the full-time MBA program working with Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Services, and Student Organizations.

Ms. Krugman holds a Master's degree from Northwestern University and a Bachelor's degree from Indiana University.

Ujjal Kohli - Chairman & CEO, Meru Networks (former EVP, Airtouch)

Before Meru Networks, Mr. Kohli was EVP of Marketing/Sales for AirTouch Cellular, a company with over $3.5 billion in revenues. He also led Strategy, Mergers & Acquisitions and two business units in his six-year stint at AirTouch Cellular. Before AirTouch, Mr. Kohlil was with McKinsey & Co. He started his career at Intel Corporation, where he held engineering and subsequently marketing positions. Mr. Kohli is a private investor in communications start-ups, investing both personal funds and LP funds through various partnerships. He currently serves on the boards of Mirapoint and Bridgewave Communications. Additionally, he is an investor/advisor in SOMA Networks, NetContinuum, ByteMobile, Santel Networks, FirstRain, and Nayna Networks. Successful investments include ConvergeNet, Maverick Networks, Berkeley Networks and Magma Design Automation. Besides, he is a charter member of TiE.

Mr. Kohli was graduated from an MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Stephen Thewlis, Associate Director of International Recruitment, Office of Admissions, Golden Gate University

Stephen Thewlis is the Associate Director of Admissions for International Recruitment at Golden Gate University. With more than 30 years of experience in the field of international education, his previous positions include: Director of the Center for International Programs at Saint Mary's College; Director of Programs at the Washington International Center in Washington DC; Associate Director of the American Language Institute at San Francisco State University; Senior Fulbright Fellow at the Ministry of Education Curriculum Development Centre in Colombo, Sri Lanka; Assistant Executive Director of the Lembaga Indonesia-America in Surabaya, Indonesia; and Peace Corps Volunteer in Pul-I-Khumri Afghanistan.

Chuck Ko, MBA, University of Southern California, Director, SINA.com

Chuck Ko currently works at SINA as a Director for non-ads fee services. Chuck oversees SINA's North America's e-commerce, Travel Channel, other revenue products and production. During his first year on managing SINA Travel Channel, he dramatically increased the tickets volume and turned the channel into a profit center. Through his efforts on streamlining EC operation, EC has continued to increase its share in SINA's overall revenue. Chuck graduated from USC (University of Southern California) MBA program in 1999. During the MBA program, he worked at Nortel as a Marketing Analyst. Prior the MBA program, Chuck was a sales associate at a national food company.

Frances Peng, MBA, Golden Gate University

Feng-yi "Frances" Peng received her B.S. degree in Textile & Clothing, concentrate on Marketing, at the Department of Textiles and Clothing, Fu-Jen Catholic University, Taiwan. Before coming to the U.S. for her MBA, Frances worked as a marketing supervisor at Haalei Clothing Co. Ltd. (a licensee of LEE COOPER Jeans in Taiwan), reporting to the CEO, from 1994-1994. and as a marketing supervisor at DFS Taiwan Limited. (Duty Free Shop), reporting to the Marketing Director, from 1997-2000. In 2001, Frances entered the Master of Business Administration program at Golden Gate University. GGU, with its main campus in San Francisco, California, specializes in education in business and technology for working adults.

Jacqueline Liu, MBA, UC Berkeley

Jacqueline is a second year MBA student at UCBerkeley. Prior to business school, she worked at Goldman Sachs in the equity derivative controllers group in New York. She also obtained her CPA license while working at PricewaterhouseCoopers in insurance and investment auditing. Jackie graduated from Rutgers University in New Jersey with a Bachelor in accounting.

Johnny Liu, Part-time MBA, Santa Clara University

Louisa Shen, MBA, UC Berkeley

Louisa was the co-chair of the 2002 Haas Asia Business Conference at the University of California at Berkeley and the keynote director for the inaugural 2001 conference. She also served as the VP of Communications on the Evening MBA Association Board. Concurrent to her studies, Louisa also worked at TSMC NA (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) as a Logistics Operations Specialist. Louisa graduated from UC Berkeley with Bachelor degrees in Molecular Cell Biology and Economics. In the fall term, she will be going to London Business School on exchange.

Richard Ann, MBA, UC Berkeley

Richard Ann is the co-chair of the 2003 Haas Asia Business Conference. Prior to coming to business school, he worked at Verizon Communications for 5 years in the commercial speech recognition division, as software engineer and project manager, deploying speech-enabled applications and cost-reduction solutions for the call center and automotive industries. Richard graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelors in Computer Science.
